A Late Izuchukwu Mbah’s Free kick Galloped Us To Victory Over Ijele FC

It was a master class display by two dead-ball specialists as Edel FC of Anambra defeated oriental neighbour, Ijele FC of Enugu state in a relegation six pointer at home at the Awka City stadium. It was a late Mbah’s free-kick in the 88th minute of the game that gave us a much needed 3 points to overtake Ijele FC and move out of the relegation zone for the first time since Matchday 1 of this ongoing season.

The Awka outfit came into the game with a morale boosting 1-1 draw in Lagos against Inter Lagos after 1472 FC were thrown out of the league for not honoring 3 matches in the season. That created a tsunami of removed points from teams that played them of which we were also affected. Two changes were made to the side that played the last game. Babalola Timileyin came in for top scorer Chindi Merpring and Sodiq Olanrewaju returned to the starting 11 in place of Gift David.

The match started with Edel FC asserting their authority early on. And 4 minutes into the game, Ijele FC goalkeeper brought down Chinaza Okeke in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Olanrewaju who was on penalty duties with Merpring on the bench. The co-captain couldn’t compose himself and blazed wild from penalty. Throughout the first half, Edel FC created numerous chances but couldn’t capitalize.

Just 2 minutes into the second half, the away team took a shocking lead via miscommunication in the back that resulted in an own-goal. They started dirty tricks to hold on their lead. But in the 64th minute, just 3 minutes after coming on, Ohanu Justus produced a moment of magic. He riffled a thunderstrike of a free-kick from 40 yards out to bring us to parity.

Many chances to get us in the lead proved abortive until Mbah Izuchukwu in the 88th minute replied with another magic moment. His free-kick again from about 25 yards took a wicked deflection to roll past a helpless Ijele FC goalkeeper to spark wild jubilation amongst our fans.

That was as good as it got for us. With this win, Edel FC overtakes Ijele FC on the log with eyes set on next weekend’s clash vs Warri Wolves in Ozoro.
